Raise Resilience for parents in Sussex - Bounce Forward

Raise Resilience for parents in Sussex

Support your children to thrive!

You want to support your children grow and develop with the resilience they need to not only face the setbacks that inevitably will come (and not just pandemics), but also be able to thrive in life. Children and young people can learn to deal with uncertainty, with your support helping them to develop the skills and strategies to bounce forward.

Raise Resilience has supported 4000 parents, up and down the country, since the start of the pandemic, and we’ve helped them in a way that is practical and based on science. Parents recognise the benefits of spending a little time with us to learn and understand the ideas for themselves (always useful) and then use our resources with their children at home.

“I have to say that I think this course is terrific! Really useful from a parenting perspective of two very different children (one neuro typical and one ASD), and also hugely helpful from an individual perspective too!! I would love to see this course rolled out in my children’s respective schools as it would be so useful in an educational setting too.”

Join us for six 1-hour sessions to explore and build your resilience, you will build self awareness about what might be getting in the way as well as helping you notice what is going well and your strengths as a parents. You will receive learning materials to use at home with your children to help you structure the way you build resilience.

We love you to join the live sessions if you can, however if you are unable to, each session is recorded and available to catch up on-demand.

  • Why are we doing this?

We have been supported by Reboot Sussex and Sussex Police to provide resilience sessions to support parents at a time when they need it most.

The sessions will provide tools and resources for you and your children to build resilience and use the current situation as a learning opportunity that will help right now and into the future.

The sessions are free for parents who have been referred via Reboot.

  • What is it?

An on-line environment to take you through the science of resilience and how to build in for yourself and your children.

We will provide you with resources and learning materials that can be used at home to help your children develop the mental muscle, gain perspective and thrive through uncertainty.

  • Are the sessions available on-demand?

Yes, each live session will be recorded and sent to you after so you can watch them in your own time.

  • Who is it for?

Parents based in Sussex and who have been referred via Reboot and parents who want to to learn resilience skills for themselves so they can model resilience with their children.

The downloadable worksheets are mostly designed for children aged nine and above. Some of the activities can be used with younger children.

Parents often ask us whether the materials are suitable for children with SEN. Whilst they are not been specifically designed for particular SEN they can be easily adapted. All materials are shared with parents so you can decide what is suitable. Many parents of children with SEN have told us how they have applied the leaning and used the materials very successfully.

What parents say

Course Overview

Session 1: Introduction to resilient parenting

What is resilience. The ages and stages for developing resilience in our children. How the brain works and the importance of negative and positive emotions.

Session 2: Optimism during uncertainty

This session explores the link between what we think, how we feel, and how we behave. Flexible and realistic thinking lies at the heart of resilience, it enables us to do the ‘right’ thing at the right time, so we achieve the best possible outcome. Optimism wedded to reality.

Session 3: Developing the mental muscle

Helping our children gain more control over how they feel and behave. Reframing unhelpful choices, and developing empathy for self and others, so we can navigate uncertainty and learn to fail well.

Session 4: Compassionate communication

Effective communication is essential as our children move into adolescence. We can find ourselves in cycles of nagging and bickering and focusing on the ‘big’ conversations, and with it, we become disconnected. Resilience and compassion are the keys to staying connected.

Session 5: Mindsets and Energy

Nurturing and developing a growth mindset in our children. Understanding the psychological link between energy, emotions and behaviour.

Session 6: Parenting to strengths

Identifying the unique strengths of our children and us – and how to use them to best effect.

“You are a wealth of knowledge and find it so valuable that you are offering this free service at this difficult time. I also was very inspired at how passionate you are about your work and the importance of teaching these skills to children and teenagers.”

“It was great to have things that I could easily use now that show quick results. Helps to give me a sense of control as this is something I can do for my kids. You don’t need any special knowledge, skills, ability or equipment. The facilitator was friendly, bubbly, responsive to chat & honest that she isn’t perfect. This really helped to make the course easy to understand & fun to be on.”
