Teaching young people how to think, not what to think

The world has moved on, but education hasn’t kept up. It’s time for a system that matches the pace, complexity, and opportunity of the future.

In a world full of fast-changing information and shifting opportunities, education faces a crucial challenge: how do we prepare young people for life beyond the classroom?

For too long the focus has been on what to think, memorising facts, recalling information, and reproducing the ‘right’ answers. Knowledge alone is no longer enough. What young people need is the ability to think, to question, evaluate, adapt, and to create.

Hello psychological fitness!

Technology and AI are reshaping the way we work and learn Many of the jobs today’s students will go into do not yet exist. The skills they will need is less about static knowledge, and more about adaptability and creativity.

Teaching how to think means equipping young people with:

  • Realistic thinking – the ability to decipher information, weigh up the evidence, search for different perspectives to problem solve effectively.
  • Flexible thinking – not relying on one source for information, challenging what they believe to be true, adapt thinking when plans change, so they make informed decisions.
  • Optimistic thinking – setting meaningful goals, planning for setbacks and challenges and building the self-confidence to pursue them.
  • Compassionate thinking – understanding themselves and others, being part of something bigger than self, building strong connections, being willing to help out and reach out when needed.

These are the foundations of psychological fitness.

The shift in education

The shift needed is one that requires schools to go beyond subject knowledge, embedding psychological skills into everyday learning. It’s about education that has meaning and purpose for now and for their lives ahead. Creating a culture where young people are encouraged to explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and reflect on their experiences.

Practical Ways Schools Can Teach How to Think

  1. Create a safe space for questions
Encourage curiosity by making it clear there are no “silly” questions. When students feel safe to explore ideas, they build confidence in their own thinking.
  2. Model flexible thinking
When things don’t go to plan, teachers and staff can show how to adapt – reframing setbacks as learning opportunities.
  3. Introduce forward thinking exercises
Goal-setting, exploring different pathways, and practising decision-making can all help students build a sense of agency about their future.
  4. Bring in real-world examples
Connecting learning to lived experience helps young people see how thinking skills are critical in all aspects of life, in relationships, at work, for life’s good things and for challenges.
  5. Celebrate the process, not just the answers
When schools reward how thinking has developed, is creative, and reflective, they help students see that learning is so much more than one “right” answer.

A student who can think critically is less likely to be deceived by misinformation.

An apprentice who can reframe setbacks as a learning opportunity is more likely to stay motivated and engaged.

A graduate who has practised thinking about the future is more equipped to set realistic goals and pursue them with confidence.
