Guidance for Schools on the Link Between Wellbeing and Attainment

Public Health England – The link between pupil health and wellbeing and attainment.

The briefing is aimed at head teachers, school governors and staff in education settings.

The briefing provides a broad, succinct scope of the scientific evidence highlighting the link between health and wellbeing and educational attainment. It underlines the value for schools of promoting health and wellbeing as an integral part of a school effectiveness strategy and highlights the important contribution of a whole-school approach.

The Penn Resilience Programme is included within the briefing as evidence to support the need to develop student’s wellbeing and the link with academic attainment.

Eustace de Sousa, National lead, Children, young People and Families said:

“Public Health England is delighted to publish this briefing for head teachers, governors and staff in education settings on the link between pupil health and wellbeing and attainment. Research shows that education and health are closely linked, so promoting the health and wellbeing of pupils and students within schools and colleges has the potential to improve the health and wellbeing of the students themselves and improve their educational outcomes”.
